Sample course info
This course has two main topics:
- Issues surrounding communication options for deaf children, with emphasis on sign language, alternate sign systems, and facilitating communication in family and school settings, including:
- Challenges and decisions facing hearing parents of deaf children
- Sign vs speech vs both (RE communication and development)
- School, learning to read, assistive technology, independent living
- Deaf culture, perspectives of Deaf community
- American Sign Language (ASL) vocabulary and introductory grammar. Why?
- Understanding grammatical concepts of a sign language and how it differs from a spoken language like English will help you understand the debates about sign vs speech.
- Speech therapists, audiologists, teachers, etc. can use signs to augment communication with a variety of students/patients with difficulties with receptive or expressive speech.
- ASL is integral to Deaf culture and an avenue for increasing your sensitivity and awareness of Deaf issues.
- A basic foundation eases further ASL language study.
