CDIS 4313: Speech Science
Sample course info
In this advanced introduction to speech science, we will work through the speech chain: the physical and linguistic systems involved in producing, perceiving, processing, and measuring the acoustics of speech. We'll work through the functions of the respiratory, phonatory, articulatory, auditory, and neurological systems and related disorders. We'll introduce various tools for measurement and treatment, and we'll apply the basics of acoustics to phonetic measurement.
Readings are to be done before class. At the beginning of class, you'll take a short reading quiz to check your comprehension and identify areas to focus on during lecture. After lecture, you'll take the same reading check again, but this time with a group and open notes/books. Your grade will be the average of your two attempts. Other class activities include practice worksheets, group work, review and exams. We'll also do several multi-part "lab" assignments in which you'll get hands-on practice using the software Praat for measuring acoustic properties of speech segments and suprasegmental/voice properties.
See the syllabus and schedule below for details.
